Soccer team defeats John Adams Academy 6-2; ‘best game for passing’ coach says

The Cavs’ coed soccer team defeated John Adams Academy 6-2 on April 13 at Cherry Island Soccer Complex.

Junior Arjin Claire scored three of the six goals. Sophomores forward Rod Azghadi, center midfielder RJ Vargo and freshman center forward Lily Schroeder each scored once.

“I’m happy with the way I played, but I know it definitely wasn’t just me,” Claire said.

He refers to his second goal as an example.

Right as Vargo received the ball from junior defensive center midfielder Malek Owaidat, Claire noticed a space between two center-backs and made his move. When Vargo passed the ball into the center, Claire was in a perfect position. He took a touch to lure out the goalie and scored his second goal of the game.

Co-coach Matt Vargo said the team’s passing skill contributed to the win.

“We worked the ball very well. I would have to say this was probably our best game for passing.”

Schroeder agreed.

“The team was great at producing through balls and capitalizing on them,” she said.

Moving forward, co-coach Vargo said the focus will be on improving as a whole.

“Since there are no playoffs or championships, we are just working on developing as a team,” he said. “The main goal is just to be better soccer players for next  year.”
