Cavs continue winning streak with a 3-1 victory over Buckingham Charter

The Cavs’ coed soccer team defeated Buckingham Collegiate Charter Academy 3-1 on April 16 at Mather Sports Center.

With junior forward Arjin Claire and freshman center forward Lily Shroeder missing, it was difficult for the Cavs to get ahead in the first half, said junior forward and defender Ethan Monasa.

Sophomore center midfielder RJ Vargo scored the first goal of the game 10 minutes before halftime. Then 10 minutes into the second half, Buckingham tied the game. Within the following 15 minutes, Monasa and sophomore forward Felix Wu revived the lead with one goal each.

“I think my goal definitely helped shift things in our favor,” Monasa said.

Wu agreed.

“After Ethan scored, I knew that we needed another goal to solidify the lead,” he said.

After a pass from Vargo, Wu broke through the opposing team’s defense and shot the ball over the goalie’s head.

The game was still fairly close after Wu scored, but the Cavs were in control.

“Even though it took us some time to score, we were definitely the superior team,” said co-coach Matt Vargo. “We out-hustled them at every play and we were overall more fit.”

Matt was impressed with the team’s improvement and work ethic.

“Everything’s coming together nicely,” he said. “I am glad to see everyone working hard and having fun.”
