Cavs swept by Cristo Rey Saints in 3-0 loss

Last Friday on Sept. 29 Country Day Cavaliers lost their first home game against the Cristo Rey Saints 3-0.

The Cavaliers responded well to Cristo Rey’s aggressive playing style. Led by senior Derek Taylor, the Cavs prevented the Saints from scoring in the first half.

Throughout the game, Taylor saved 10 shots and junior Henry Wilson 2 shots. Team captain Luke Scripps kept the ball out of the opponent’s possession with his speed and heading skills.

“We defended well as a team. I thought in the first half, we did a really good job of winning our loose balls. And I think that Derek Taylor overall had a really good game,” Coach Vargo said.

Coach Champayne also expressed that as a young team, the team played very well. Even though they lost, the team still did a great job playing against last year’s league champion Cristo Rey, who has drastically more players on their team.

Coach Vargo also pointed out some areas the team can improve on.

“We need to take our chances when we get them. We weren’t shooting the ball when we had opportunities to shoot, and also just needed a little better communication, he said.

Coach Vargo wishes for the team to continue working on getting better every day, and to work on making the playoffs for this season.

“If our league gets three spots, we should be in the third spot. But I don’t know if we get three spots,” he said.

The Cavs’ next game is on Monday, Oct. 2nd at home against Faith Christian.
