Country Day’s boys varsity soccer team lost 3-0 against Western Sierra on Tuesday, Oct. 10 with a player injury in the last quarter of the game. 

In this game, senior Derek Taylor saved 3 shots and freshmen Nolan Montoya and Ryan Scripps came very close to scoring multiple times. Co-Coach George Champayne also expressed that the team had overall good play. 

The team also adopted a different strategy for this game. 

Coach Champayne said, “We switched around a bunch of players. We’ll start adjusting players to where we need them for each game.”

However, he also said that the team made a couple of mistakes. 

“We scored one of our own goals. The guy went to cross the ball and hit the upper beam; he didn’t mean to do that. We gave away two unlucky goals, both of them should never have gone in. And we had the opportunity in the beginning to get one or two goals.”

Coach Champayne added, “What we can improve on right now is a little more passing and moving the ball to each other. We’re playing a lot of long balls, and long balls end up to be more of a 50-50 chance, and we need to nail that down to 70-30 chance by passing.”

During the last quarter, an opposing player ran at freshman Nolan Montoya from behind and took him out. The player received an automatic red card, but Montoya sustained a calf injury.

“We’re hoping he snaps out of it and he’s ok for Friday’s and Monday’s games, though he probably won’t play,” Coach Champayne said. 

The team is still working hard on making the CIF playoffs. 

“On Monday we play Cristo Rey again, and if we can tie or win that game, that gives us the chance to go into the playoffs,” Coach Champayne said. 

The Cavs’ next game is at home on Wednesday, Oct. 11 against John Adams Academy.
