In an email to the Country Day community, head of school Lee Thomsen addressed Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new regulations on school openings in the fall.
“We plan to begin school in a remote learning environment,” Thomsen wrote. “We will confirm a remote start with our families after Aug. 16 as we continue to monitor the watch list for Sacramento County.”
Furthermore, the school is canceling scheduled in-person summer classes from July 27 to Aug. 7 and issuing refunds to anyone registered, according to the email.
Newsom’s new policy applies to public and private schools and requires all teachers and students from third to 12th grade to wear masks, among many other guidelines, when classrooms open.
However, schools may only open in-person learning if their respective counties are removed from the county watchlist for at least 14 days, according to the email.
As of July 17, Sacramento County remained on the list, along with 31 other counties.
According to Thomsen, Sacramento County must be removed from the list by Aug. 16 in order to have in-person classes at Country Day when school starts on Sept. 1.
